Hitting the Road This Holiday Season? Check Out These Tips to Avoid Travel Aches & Strains

Our Services in Center Point AL

For many, the holiday season also brings with it lots of traveling. If you'll be driving to see loved ones this holiday season, our Center Point chiropractor here at Lofton Chiropractic Clinic Inc. has some advice that will help you avoid neck and back pain often associated with long road trips.

Avoiding Aches and Pains While On-the-Road

If you tend to do a lot of your holiday traveling on-the-road, then you may already be all-too-familiar with the fact that spending long periods of time in the driver's seat of your car can cause all kinds of back and neck problems. From stiff neck to lower back pain, all that time sitting in a less-than-ideal position can really take a toll on your body.

One of the best ways to avoid discomfort associated with road trips this holiday season is to take frequent breaks while on-the-road. Every couple of hours, pull off at a nearby exit where you can take a moment to get out of the car, stretch, and walk around.

The positioning of your seat can also make a big difference, so make sure your seat is moved forward as much as comfortably possible. This will help to keep you from slouching or having otherwise poor posture while you're behind the wheel, which can reduce the likelihood of developing back or neck strain. Also be sure to angle your seat properly to about 100 or 110 degrees for optimal ergonomics. There are also all kinds of great cushions and other options available that are designed to give you added lumbar support in a car seat, so consider treating yourself to one of these if you know you'll be spending a lot of time behind-the-wheel this holiday season.

If you're lucky enough to have a car with heated seats, take advantage of this feature! A little bit of heat can go a long way in relieving pain and tightness in the joints and muscles along your neck and back. And of course, if all else fails and you still experience some back or neck pain, be sure to have some aspirin or other safe dosages of painkillers available to you if needed.
