Overview of Scoliosis

Our doctor describes scoliosis is a spinal curvature greater than 10 degrees.  Between 5 and 7 million U.S. residents suffer from this condition.  Since it most often appears between the ages of 8 and 10, many people consider scoliosis a childhood problem.  However, it also develops in adults.

Some scoliotic individuals remain stable, while others experience a progression in the curvature of the spine.  The most notable feature of the disorder is an S- or C-shaped spinal curve.

Scoliosis is an idiopathic condition for around 80 percent of those afflicted with it.  The remaining cases track to causes such as tumors, neurological disease, or trauma.

Common Symptoms

Sometimes the first sign of scoliosis is back pain.  Wear and tear in adult patients can cause damage to spinal joints and bones.  After spinal disks break down, the condition is obvious in a spinal tilt and eventual curvature.

Although some patients experience no symptoms, these are the most common signs:

    • The head appears off-center
    • One hip looks lower than the other or protrudes
    • Each side of the back appears to be a different height
    • Ribs are pushed out
    • Shoulders sit at different heights
    • When the patient is standing, arms cannot extend straight down

Among other symptoms are difficulty walking, bone spurs, shortness of breath, and uneven hips and/or shoulders.  Some sufferers report fatigue, feeling full soon after eating or losing height.  Additional signs are difficulty standing straight; leg numbness, weakness, or pain; and a lower-back bump.  The disorder frequently limits back mobility.

Chiropractic Care for This Disorder

Chiropractic care for scoliosis focuses on how to control a patient’s discomfort.  Scoliosis pain management has made it possible for many individuals with this disorder to lead normal lives and become physically active.

The core treatment for scoliosis is the use of chiropractic adjustments, also known as spinal manipulations.  Adjustments help reduce scoliotic curves and realign the spine.  Some patients also benefit from therapeutic exercise or back braces.
