Chiropractic care has been a blessing to many millions of people since its discovery in Davenport, Iowa, in 1895 by Dr. D.D. Palmer. Dr. Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a deaf janitor named Harvey Lillard, who became deaf after an injury to the neck. Dr. Palmer evaluated Mr. Lillard and noticed a vertebra that was out of alignment in his neck. After the adjustment, Mr. Lillard regained his hearing. Even before the modern discovery, there were ancient records of manipulation of the spine to restore health.
Chiropractic is a drug-free form of healthcare that focuses on the structure and integrity of the spine. The brain is like a giant super computer, and the nervous system connects the brain to all the parts of the body. This is the way that the brain communicates with the body. Nerves touch every part of your body. A misaligned vertebra can interfere with the function of your nervous system. This is called a subluxation.
As the nerves travel through the spine, they can have irritation and pressure placed upon them by vertebrae and other joints that are misaligned. This can cause abnormal functioning in an area and pain. A chiropractor's goal is to relieve the pressure from the nerve by applying a specific force or chiropractic adjustment to misaligned joints, thereby freeing motion and relieving pressure from the nerve. Correcting a vertebral subluxation activates your natural healing ability, thereby awakening your "inner healer."
